I love working with technology and sharing my knowledge with others about it.
In all of my roles, I’ve enjoyed having a broad understanding of technologies I work with. Not just know the RDBMS (whether it be Oracle or SQL Server), but having a good understanding of the database’s interaction with the operating system, and well as what’s going on in the underlying hardware.
I also try to as much as possible in this business, keep up with the latest trends in the industry. I’ve worked with several “cloud” systems and presented on them as well. In real life, I’ve been a production DBA for a long time, so I understand the pains we can face.
I’ve worked with a lot of technologies, but these are where my focus has been in recent years:
- Microsoft SQL Server (particularly high availability and disaster recover)
- VMWare Virtualization
- Oracle (yes, Oracle, I’ve worked on 7-11)
- Microsoft Clustering
- Red Hat Linux (I can still write shell scripts)

In 2008, I made a decision to start presenting, and it has been one of the best career decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve met a bunch of really great people and really broadened my technical horizons. Some of my speaking credits are below:
